If you've been to Coburn, chances are pretty high that the route of your travels brought you along Penn's Creek Road. You may have even noticed the old mill on the way. Well if curiosity got the best of you, here’s a tidbit about its history!

Perched 1.5 miles from Coburn along Penn’s Creek Road rests the historic water-powered feed mill, dating back to 1845 when Philip Kryder (or Kreider) first owned it. Fast forward to 1900 and Simon Rote buys this timeless treasure for a cool $2,200 - followed by his sons Thomas & Lester taking ownership in 1934. Thus began 'Penn's Pride' – grinding corn meal on big stones fueled solely by the power of rushing creek water!

In 1960, Morris Martin acquired a mill, two houses and a creamery - all in one swoop! With his impressive foresight and entrepreneurial spirit at work, Coburn saw quite an upgrade.

It's not hard to imagine the past at the mill. The former railroad depot was transformed into a bustling mill in 1970 – and, if you squint just right, you can still see traces of that old railbed running behind it!

1972 was an unforgettable year for the Mill - it faced destruction from Hurricane Agnes, which saw flood waters up to the first floor of the big mill and it washed away the railroad bridge at Poe Paddy.

But out of despair came hope as customers and employees jumped in with a team effort to help clean things up!

Ed and Mary Martin handed over ownership in 2008 after 22 years at the helm to David Walton. Eliza Walton, daughter of David, took charge back in 2013 and today you'll still find her proudly running the mill and churning out 'Martin's Penns Pride' recipes just like those before her.
