Raising baby chicks is an exciting journey, and as they reach 2-3 weeks old, they start growing fast! This stage is crucial for their development, and proper care ensures they transition smoothly from the brooder to the great outdoors.
Critical Care for 2-3 Week Old Chicks
At this age, chicks are more active and curious, but they still need a warm, safe environment. Here’s what to focus on:
✅ Brooder Temperature: Start lowering the heat gradually. Reduce the brooder temperature by 5°F per week. By three weeks, aim for 80-85°F as they start growing feathers.
✅ Space & Enrichment: Chicks are getting bigger and need more space to move around. If they seem restless, consider expanding their brooder or adding perches and small obstacles to encourage activity.
✅ Proper Feed & Grit: Continue feeding a high-quality chick starter feed with the right balance of protein and nutrients. If you introduce treats, add chick-sized grit to help with digestion.
✅ Fresh Water Daily: Keep their water fresh and clean. Chicks love to scratch and make a mess, so check their waterer frequently.
✅ Socialization & Handling: Handle your chicks regularly to get them used to human interaction. This helps them become friendlier and more comfortable as they grow.
Preparing to Move Chicks Outside
Before your chicks make the big move, there are a few key steps to ensure a smooth transition:
✅ Weather Check: Chicks should be fully feathered (around 5-6 weeks old) before they can handle outdoor temperatures. If nights are still chilly, delay the move or provide supplemental heat.
✅ Coop Setup: Make sure your chicken coop is secure, dry, and predator-proof. Check for proper ventilation and ensure they have a safe roosting area.
✅ Gradual Outdoor Time: Start introducing chicks to the outdoors for short supervised periods on warm days. This helps them adjust to their new environment.
✅ Integration with Older Hens: If you already have a flock, introduce young chickens slowly and carefully to avoid bullying. A temporary partition in the run allows them to see each other before full integration.
